Shamanic Project

Shamanic Clothing a fair to wear label, developed as a project in Mali, West Africa. A fusion of western design and traditional African fabrics.

Shamanic clothing is a social enterprise set up by myself Monique Drinkwater (project leader) and Spela Kalcic, Dr of Anthropology from Slovenia Europe (Director of Liminal Institute)

Shamanic project  works in conjunction with Liminal Institute of Social Transfusion, Creative and Applied Science a Slovenian NGO.

Spela and I met in Bamako Mali in July 2011 and discovered we both share a passion for African fabrics and textiles, culture and the people, and were so inspired by the spirit and skill of the West African artisans, that we decided to join forces and create fashion that would sell to the western markte. Fashion made in Mali and the proceeds raised from the clothing will feed back in to Mali via the Slovenian NGO.

Our current goals are to increase trade oppotunities for Malian desginers, tailors and artisans, pay fair wages and to form a fun and inspirational way of developing local peoples skills and talents and marketing them in the west. Our moto “Helping Others to Help Themselves” and “Thinking with Your Hands”. The development of a creative HUB, an autonomous space where we can all work together, eat together and create clothing and accessories under the banner of Shamanic is high on our agenda to date.

Now in early days of development, I am currently in Mali working to create a collection of clothing for a local buisness, that they can sell to travellers and or local people, by offering a set of patterns, a tour to buy material from local shops and galleries a tailor made to measure experience all done in one day, giving the customer a cultural and shopping experience and a quality item of clothing they can wear on tour and again at home in the west, due to the thought of design.

Working with local tailors and patterns donated to the project by a designer/seamstress from Benin, Natacha is the owner and artisan of Bamako Sur Mesure, an established and high quality made to measure company situated in Bamako Mali.

Bamako Sur Mesure for Shamanic will be the promotional name and the collection will be known as the “Shamanic Sleeping Camel Collection”.

Please keep an eye out here as soon I will be bringing the Shamanic and Bamako Sur Mesure quality clothing and design to Australia and will be looking for stockists of this original Bamako Mali Brand. WE MAY JUST POP UP SOMEWHERE…..
